PERI researcher James Boyce advocates for climate superfunds as a way to put some of the costs of climate change back where they belong- to the fossil fuel companies.
“The costs of extreme weather events—severe storms, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and drought—in the United States have surpassed $100 billion per year since 2020. … At the same time, fossil fuel companies reap big bucks. In 2023 the top 15 oil and gas corporations operating in the United States booked $172 billion in profits.”
