PERI Co-Director Gerald Epstein discusses how, in the wake of the global pandemic, economists and policymakers from all political persuasions agree that we must increase governement spending and relax budget deficit costraints. However, where they vary is in how this money is allocated. Progressives want policies that not only deal with the direct macroeconomic impacts on workers and poor people but that also begin to repair the deep structural flaws in our economy that underly the devastation that the pandemic is producing. While, the other side is proposing policies that support payments to big corporations, banks and the financial markets.
