Since late November, farmers in India have been protesting and demanding the repeal of three Farm Acts that were passed in extreme haste by the Indian government in September. These Acts would dilute regulation in agricultural markets, gradually reduce state support in providing minimum support prices and enhance the role of private contractors, agri-businesses, and large corporate entities. Here is a letter written by researchers associated with the Asian Political Economy Program to the Indian Agriculture minister urging the government to repeal the Acts and negotiate with farmers for genuine, democratic reforms in Indian agriculture instead of imposing top-down neoliberal ones.
